Five Things I have learnt from Assessment 1

1. My photoshop skills have improved since completing these concept boards. I am now more familiar with:

- using the pen tool: it was really hard using the pen tool for week 2 homework, but after practising and cutting out the images for these boards, I love using this tool!

- layering

- using different filters

- magic wand tool

- rastorising

- flattening images

- saving for web & devices

2. Having concept boards printed at The World of Print produces a professional end product.

It can be costly but it is totally worth it!

I learnt all the different types of paper available out there and how the gsm of a paper affects the look of our boards. Eg. silk, gloss, high gloss

3. Mounting: I tried using spray adhesive + double sided tape to mount my concept boards onto foam core, but I found it more effective to just use double sided tape on all sides. Your fingers wont be sticky and you won't suffocate either~ plus, double sided tape is much more easier to use. I must be patient when I am mounting so everything is perfect!

4. From doing this assignment, I learnt to start each component of the assignment and instead of lingering on one board, start another one and then return to the first one. By doing that and not staring at the same thing constantly, newer, fresher ideas popped into my head!

5. To start the assignment as soon as we receive the brief!

I have decided to use my creative board to communicate my concept. It communicates Antoni Gaudi's philosophy of "working with an organic language by abstracting natural forms". This board also captures the different colours that Gaudi used in the interior and exterior of his building: "colours found in marine life". Gaudi avoided using straight lines in this building and I have tried to do the same with my concept board.

#5 Photoshop: Layering

Using the pen tool, i cut an image of one of Alexander McQueen's catwalk designs/model.

It was my first time using the pen tool, and

I nearly killed my arm cos I was so tense and nervous...hah

a but you get used to it! =] I started out with the first image, and the result of using the pen tool is shown below:

During class, we played round with photoshop layers. using the image we cut out, we added a background, text and a shape & this is what I came up with:

For this layer, I placed the image on top of the background and typed "reptilia" on the side. The elliptical shape has been filled with an orange colour and then changed to "soft light".

For this layer, I free transformed the model and made her larger, so that not her whole body fit onto the page. I used a filter and texturised the image.

This layer, the elliptical shape has been on top of the background, image and text. The background and image have been made less transparent.

#4 Scanning (W3 HW)

1. How to scan:

1. Place your image on the scanner, face down, and close the lid.
2. Press the 'scan' button on the scanner, or if you prefer, open up the program on your computer (Brother ControlCentre3) and select where you want to save your file and hit 'scan'.
3. To change the settings of your scan, open the 'customs' options and select the descreen option, appropriate resolution, scan type and document size etc. I think with my scanner, the descreen option is already built in and so, you will not have to worry about turning on the descreen function.
4. Save your scan in a desired location and preferably as .jpeg (in order to upload onto the web) and .psd (use in photoshop).


2. Discuss what the Descreen selection does and why it is important (include the images scanned in exercise 1).

When the descreen selection on the scanner is turned on, the moire pattern scan is avoided and a better resolution of the scanned image is produced. The moire pattern appears on magazines images that have been scanned with the descreen selection turned off.

With my scanner, I think the descreen function is built in and clear images were produced.


3. Explain what resolutions are best for web, print and presentations for fashion.

Unfortunately, my scanner did not have the 72dpi and 360 dpi resolutions.



This magazine image (left) was scanned at 100dpi and there are tiny square patches and the image is not crisp and defined.










The image was scanned at 150dpi (right) and the result is clearer than the image scanned at 100dpi. There are no visible square patches on the image, however, there are faint lines that run across the image.








This is the result of the image (right) being scanned at 300dpi. The image is clear and crisp. The model and the dress are clearly defined and there are no lines or squares.



When scanning images for the print and web, the higher resolution of 300dpi is satistory in producing clear, crisp and defined images. I'm not sure what the outcome of a 360dpi looks like so I will have to wait and see. But if I was using my home scanner, I would select the 300dpi resolution.


4. Fabric and DDS Scans

These images were scanned at 300dpi with 24bit Colour Mode (this was the only colour mode option on my scanner).

This blogger seems to have heaps of time on her hands and goes to a million fashion runway shoes! Luckily for me, she does and blogs about them =) her supporting images of the models outside the show etc makes her blog come alive and exciting for the reader.

Once again, she is blogging from Paris and reading her blog makes me reminisce about the time I went to Paris and got lost shopping in LaFayette and Au Printemps!

Her language is very casual and "normal" and she seems to be talking to "me" through her blog and images =D

alicepoint is an european blog that is written in a foreign language (i have yet to find out what language it is) and translated in English. It is winter in Europe and I enjoy reading this blog and viewing the images and photographs as it reminds me of my recent holiday in Europe and my love for this cold and chilly season.

Alice, the blogger, provides an insight to the fashionable street styles on the opposite side of the world and this allows me to look forward to the next season's trends and clothes. The inclusion of scenery/European street photographs allows us to see where the blogger comes from and I love this because even though she is from another country, fashion is something we have in common!

She blogs about the clothes she's bought and documents her experience whilst shopping for these fashion pieces and this brings life and a different interest and charm to her blog.
